MARIO MÉNDEZ SAAVEDRA

Biography

He carries out his professional studies at the Conservatory of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, at the Escuela Superior de Canto in Madrid and a Master’s Degree in Opera at the Joaquín Rodrigo Conservatory in Valencia. As a singer, he has trained under prestigious teachers such as María Orán, Manuel Cid, Ofelia Sala, Raúl Giménez, Jorge de León, Celso Albelo, among others.

In his professional life and within the operatic repertoire, he has played, among others, the roles of Cecco (“Il mondo della luna”, Haydn), Bastián (“Bastián and Bastiana”, Mozart) and Tamino (“Die Zauberflöte”, Mozart). In his repertoire, roles such as Sauce Leaf (“The Fairy Queen”, Purcell, Tenerife Opera), Doctor Owl and the Fox (“Pinocchio”, Pierangelo Valtinoni, Teatro de la Zarzuela), the witch (“Hansel and Gretel “, Humperdinck, Tenerife Opera) and Rustighello (” Lucrezia Borgia ”, Donizetti, Tenerife Opera).

In zarzuela it is worth highlighting, among others, roles such as Soldado (“The sung life and death of General Malbrú”, Jacinto Valledor, Teatro de la Zarzuela), the boy from Algeciras (“La Marchenera”, Moreno Torroba, Teatro de la Zarzuela) , Serafín (“Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente”, Chueca, Cuyás Theater in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), Franz (“El Carillón de Brujas”, world premiere of AL Wagener, Palau de Altea) and Julián (“La Verbena de la Paloma “, Tomás Bretón, Canarian Friends of Zarzuela at the Cuyás Theater).

In a symphonic repertoire, he has performed, among others, the Magnificat (Pergolesi, Alfredo Kraus Auditorium), El Mesías (Händel, Academy of Religious Music Week in Cuenca), Misa Dominicus in C major KV66 (Mozart, Aldaia Municipal Auditorium) , Mahagonny songspiel (Kurt Weill, for the “44. Fränkische Musiktage Alzenau, Festival der Jungen” in Frankfurt, role of Bill) and recitals in halls and theaters such as the Aula Magna (Fundación Mapfre Guanarteme), Fundación Juan March, Sala Iturbi del Palau de la Música de Valencia, Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Valencia, Pérez Galdós Theater.

The young tenor, has been awarded with titles such as the Extraordinary and Specialty Award of the Professional Conservatory of Music of LPGC; finalist in the “María Orán” contest in Tenerife (Canary Islands); finalist in the “Musical Youth of Spain” contest, obtaining the “Bärenreiter” scholarship, and finalist in the “Wagnerian Association of Madrid” contest.
